Anna Scouten
“Not fire, not ice (cover)”

Anna has been playing guitar/singing since she was 12. She only recently started posting videos on youtube, and I’m so glad she has. There’s an honesty and innocence in her performances, and she has a beautiful, soft voice.

Take notice of her – she assures me she will be posting more. Please rate and comment on her videos, and subscribe to her channel.

Here’s the video. If you want to download this song, click on the download link at the bottom of this post. I’ve tried to “clean it” from the high-pitched beeping.

Rosi Golan
“C’est L’amour”

I first learned about Rosi via Greg Holden. He was visiting her in NYC or something and mentioned her in a video or on facebook or something.

I love this song. It’s catchy, cute, and quirky – just how I like it. Rosi is a great songwriter. A lot of her songs have a sort of innocent feel about them. I just like how they’re produced. They aren’t overly done.

I’ve listened to a few songs on this CD. You can too with the link below to amazon.com. Give her a chance, you’ll like it!

Kina Grannis
“Teeny Tiny”

She said not to take this song seriously, but seriously – I LOVE this tune. It’s just her and her ukulele, and there’s something so sweet and innocent about it. The lyrics are a bit light-hearted and whimsical. I hope this song strikes a chord with you in the way that it did me. Kina, if you are reading this, I am a big fan and cannot wait until you come to Dallas on May 9th. I am looking forward to your performance.

If you love this song, check out the video, and check out all her other work on youtube. She has some amazing songs on there.

Thom Yorke (of Radiohead)
“Fog (again) (live)”

I love Thom Yorke. I love him for music like this. For all the songs like this he has created, and for the way he delivers a melody. There’s something so real conveyed when he sings, and I love how his songs usually have a “shape” to them. They start quiet, build build BUILD, and then fall off again. This short number is part of a b-sides album of rare gems, originally released in 2004 as a Japan-only compilation album.

Remember when all songs were this short? They left you wanting more, just like this one does. If you just hit play for the 5th time, go buy the album. Thanks for listening.

Imogen Heap
“Hide and Seek 2”

Immy is nothing short of greatness. I love her 12 second clips, tweets, and especially her music.

It has been a while since I have added any music. I needed to get back to the roots of this site, and I was able to do so through the same song that inspired me to start the blog – hide and seek. This version she recorded for a benefit CD for Tibet. This CD is amazing, and I encourage you to go buy it right now. It is truly inspirational.

Greg Holden – Changes

Greg Holden
“Changes”

I’ve been following Greg Holden for about a year now on youtube. For the past month or so I’ve been wanting to post one of his songs, and tonight he posted a song that I simply could not pass up. “Changes” is amazing. This version I’ve posted is a live performance, not a studio cut. He has an amazing ability to create beautiful melodies and deliver the lyrics with such fluidity. I love every song he’s posted.

Rosie Thomas sings a farewell.

Rosie Thomas
“Farewell”

I listened to this song for the first time today and loved it. It’s so muted and minimal, but still so emotive.
There aren’t huge rises or falls, just a simple, honest musical expression.

Enjoy.

Barcelona – Get up (*3)

Barcelona
“Get up, Get up, Get up”

It is 1:23 am. After a long, hard day of working I am left wanting nothing but rest. However, I found this song. This song, with this wonderful piano and this wonderful voice.

And all in a moment I was revived. Revived with a sense of purpose and of passion. When all else fails, music can still play the concert of a lifetime to my heart.

“Where words fail, music speaks.” – Hans Christian Andersen

When I was in college, nearly a decade ago, I would sit and play piano in a dark rehearsal hall. As dark as that room was, it was such an illuminating experience for my life. I don’t mean to be melodramatic at all, but I cherish those times still to this day.

This song reminded me how much I cared about music back then, and how deeply rewarding just listening can be. Just listening. Just. Listen.

Long after I fall asleep tonight, I hope I hear “get up… get up… get up”.

Ben Sollee – Panning for gold

Ben Sollee
“Panning for gold”

This site wouldn’t be what it is today without you – the listener. I occasionally get emails from people who love this website and want to share artists they’re sure I’d love. This is one such case. A big thanks to Krystal for introducing me to Ben Sollee. If you know Krystal, pat her on the back for me.

I love this song. There’s such a flutter of goings on in this song. The soft high-pitched trills add an amazing depth to this song. It gives rise to a sort of tension that ends up resolving into the bridge. This song builds nicely and seems to end on a softer, more thoughtful note.

Bon Iver is Blindsided

Bon Iver
“Blindsided”

I first listened to this back in February 2008. I’m not sure who directed me to this music, but I’m certainly glad for it. There’s a subdued sensitivity not only in the vocal timbre, but also in the instrumentation here. If you want to feel sad, you should listen to this. If sad music makes you happy, this song will probably make you really happy.

Enjoy, and please buy their CD!
